In South Africa, outdoor living isn’t just seasonal — it’s a way of life. From weekend braais in Cape Town to summer evenings in Johannesburg and coastal holidays along the Garden Route, our decks become the heart of the home.
After months of winter rain, coastal humidity, Highveld storms and intense UV exposure, timber decking can start to look tired, grey or uneven. The good news is that with the right preparation and protection system, restoring your deck is straightforward and long-lasting.
Here is your complete step-by-step guide to getting your deck summer ready with Osmo.
If your deck has recently been installed, patience is key.
Fresh timber contains natural extractives such as tannins and resins. These need time to leach out before oiling. Applying a finish too soon can prevent proper penetration and may result in uneven absorption or premature failure.
This is especially important in South Africa where dense hardwoods like Garapa are commonly used. Garapa contains high levels of natural oils and extractives. If oiled immediately after installation, the finish may struggle to bond evenly.
The recommended approach is simple. Allow new timber to weather naturally for approximately 8–12 weeks. Ensure exposure to rain and sun to stabilise the surface. Once weathered and dry, the wood is ready to accept oil properly.
Allowing this process ensures deeper oil penetration, better adhesion, longer-lasting protection and a more even, professional finish. Skipping this step often leads to costly rework later.

Once the timber has weathered, or if you are refreshing an existing deck, proper cleaning is essential.
Over time decks accumulate dust and dirt, braai grease, wine and food spills, garden debris and algae growth. Using general household detergents or harsh chemical cleaners can damage timber fibres and compromise future coatings.
Osmo Decking Cleaner is specifically formulated for exterior timber. It effectively removes dirt, grease and organic build-up without harming the wood.
Always dilute the cleaner with water, scrub along the grain using a decking brush and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow the deck to dry completely before applying oil.
One litre of diluted cleaner can treat approximately 30–100 square metres, depending on dilution strength and soiling levels.
For best results, use the Osmo Decking Brush with Handle paired with a telescopic system handle. This ensures even pressure along the grain, back-friendly application and faster cleaning of larger areas.
Not all decks simply need cleaning. Some require restoration.
If your deck has greyed due to UV exposure, the lignin in the timber surface has broken down. While some homeowners appreciate this aged look, others prefer restoring the natural wood tone.
Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel is ideal for greyed or weathered decking. This non-drip gel works in as little as 20 minutes to restore the timber’s original colour before oiling.
If your deck has an old or failing coating that is peeling, flaking, cracking or film-forming, it must be completely removed before applying Osmo. Osmo Paint Remover Gel removes old coatings evenly and effectively, leaving a clean surface ready for oil penetration.
It is important to note that non-Osmo film-forming finishes must be stripped back fully. Osmo oils penetrate into the wood and cannot bond correctly over old varnish or sealer layers.
Once the deck is clean, dry and properly prepared, protection is essential, particularly under the South African sun.
Osmo Decking Oil is designed as a two-coat system. Apply the first coat thinly and evenly along the grain. Allow it to dry before applying the second coat for full protection. This builds a durable, weather-resistant finish while maintaining breathability.
Unlike traditional varnishes or sealers, Osmo Decking Oil is microporous. This means the wood can breathe, the finish moves with natural timber expansion and contraction and it will not crack, peel or blister.
This is particularly important in South Africa where decks experience high UV exposure, heavy rainfall, temperature fluctuations and coastal humidity. Film-forming coatings struggle under these conditions, whereas microporous oil systems perform significantly better over time.
One of the standout advantages of Osmo Decking Oil is its coverage. It offers approximately 24 square metres per litre per coat. A 2.5 litre tin covers up to 60 square metres on a single coat, or around 30 square metres with the recommended two-coat system. This provides excellent value per square metre while delivering superior protection.

For decks around swimming pools, entertainment areas, steps or family braai zones, you may consider applying Osmo Anti-Slip Decking Oil as a top coat over standard Decking Oil.
It provides added slip resistance and helps reduce algae growth. While not essential for every deck, it is highly recommended where safety is a priority.
One of the greatest frustrations with traditional decking systems is the need for sanding before recoating. With Osmo, maintenance is simple.
When signs of wear appear, clean the surface and apply a thin maintenance coat. No sanding is required. Spot repairs blend seamlessly with the existing finish, meaning you can maintain high-traffic areas without redoing the entire deck.
To maximise the life of your deck, follow a consistent maintenance routine.
On a weekly or monthly basis, sweep debris and inspect for loose boards or screws. Clean high-traffic areas if necessary.
Every two to three months, wash the deck with diluted Decking Cleaner, scrub along the grain and rinse thoroughly. High-traffic or exposed decks may require cleaning every four to six weeks.
Annually, ideally at the end of summer or winter, inspect for fading or loss of water beading. Apply one thin maintenance coat in worn areas. High-traffic decks may require recoating every nine to twelve months.
Every two to three years, revive greyed timber if required, strip failing finishes if necessary and re-oil once dry.
Exposure matters. Decks in full sun, heavy rain or humid coastal areas will wear faster and may require more frequent maintenance.
Wipe food and drink spills immediately. For oily marks, wash with diluted cleaner. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
Do not pressure wash aggressively or use strong detergents, as these can damage timber fibres and shorten coating life.
For quick repairs, simply clean the area and apply a thin coat. No sanding is required.
