All hardwoods share a critical characteristic:

This is what makes them durable—but also what makes them difficult to finish.
When coatings are applied too early or incorrectly:
They struggle to penetrate
They sit on the surface
They fail prematurely
This is particularly true with varnishes and film-forming coatings, which often crack, peel or flake in outdoor conditions.
This is where most people go wrong.
Weathering is one of the most important steps when working with hardwood—and one of the most ignored.
Weathering is the process of allowing freshly installed or machined hardwood to sit exposed to the elements before applying any finish.
Typically:
8–12 weeks of natural exposure
This allows the timber to transition from a freshly machined state to a condition where it is ready to properly accept oil.
When hardwood is machined or sanded, the surface is:
Saturated with natural oils
Relatively closed in structure
Low in absorbency
If you apply oil at this stage:
The oil cannot penetrate properly
Absorption is inconsistent
The finish sits too much on the surface
Long-term performance is reduced
Weathering is not just about time—it is a natural conditioning process.
Exposure to sunlight and oxygen begins to break down the natural oils at the surface. This reduces greasiness and allows finishes to bond more effectively.
Environmental exposure helps the timber fibres relax slightly, improving the ability of oil to penetrate into the wood rather than sitting on top.
The timber expands and contracts through exposure to rain and sun, helping it stabilise before being sealed.
During weathering, hardwood will begin to:
Fade in colour
Lose its richness
Turn dull or slightly grey
This is completely normal.
It is not damage—it is part of the preparation.
Once Osmo oil is applied, the natural colour is restored and enhanced.
Skipping this step is one of the biggest causes of failure in hardwood finishing.

Clean and degrease
