Why Do Some Varnishes Turn Wood Yellow or Orange? (And How to Avoid It)

One of the most common frustrations when finishing wood — especially light timbers like oak, ash, or maple — is the unexpected shift in colour after applying a varnish or sealer. What starts as a clean, natural tone can quickly become yellow, amber, or even orange over time.

Understanding why this happens — and how to avoid it — is key to achieving a consistent, modern finish that stays true to the original look of the wood.

Why Varnishes and Sealers Change Colour
